Workshops and Public Viewing

Today was a day of UNBelievable Experience Science workshops and public viewing. We got up and met for breakfast at 8:00AM and discussed the events of the day. I managed to snap a picture of Meaghan with her grapefruit. She really appeared to struggle with it.

It was a tough grapefruit. I think it fought back.

We spent the morning in a variety of workshops. These are the ones attended today.
  • Natasha attended Psychology and Biology workshops
  • Meaghan and Susan attended a workshop on Forestry, and another on Geology of New Brunswick
  • Tony attended a workshop on Technology, Management and Entrepreneurship, and another on Maths/Statistics
  • Abhi attended a workshop on Electrical and Computer Engineering, and another on Chemical Engineering
  • Sonia, Om, and James attended workshops on Mechanical/Nuclear Engineering, and BioMedical Engineering on Artificial Limbs
  • Favian and Shelby on Foresty, and Geomatic and Geodesy Engineering

Unfortunately, because we were all in separate workshops, pictures of our Finalists were not taken during the morning. Except I did receive some from James.

After lunch, it was public viewing and all sorts of people came in to view projects. The session did run long from 1:00PM to 8:00PM. There were some breaks, but it was quite arduous. Schools, CTV News, University personnel, judges, and the general public came by to see the projects.  Here is Team South Fraser below standing with their projects. Just be aware that all were not in there best judging attire. Regardless, they still looked well put together.

We even had a few local politicians come by to visit. New Brunswick Deputy Premiere Stephen Horsman visited Tony's project on Swarm Intelligence and Policing. The Deputy Premiere is a former police officer so this was of particular interest to him.

As I was hovering around trying to get a photograph of the politicians with our Finalists, the Deputy Premiere and the Minister of Education wanted a photo op with me. Normally I don't do these things, but Susan insisted I did.

At some point in the afternoon, Susan and I had a moment to breathe so we went to the top balcony of the SUB to take some photographs. The views afforded up there on this beautiful day were breathtaking. The red bricks of the campus buildings just jump out against the rich blue sky in the background.

A breathtaking view down the centre-line of UNB Fredericton campus.

After dinner, the evening concluded with the CWSF talent show. You can see the Vimeo of the entire event by clicking here. There were fifteen performances by Finalists from across the nation. Everything from slam poetry, yodeling, to guitar solos. (We had strung Abhi along for a few days making him believe that we had entered him into giving an Indian Bangara dance performance to everyone here. It actually kept him quiet and occupied for a few days. Susan didn't have the heart to have it go much longer so she finally told him yesterday during lunch. He was really relieved and took the prank well). Anyway, we have a very talented group of young people here at the CWSF. After the final performance concluded, everyone was asked to step outside into the dark for a photo opportunity. It was a little too dark for a real photograph of the group, but it got everyone outside to see the surprise fireworks show courtesy of the University and the City of Fredericton. It lasted almost ten minutes. This little town has really pulled all stops for the Finalists and the Canada Wide Science Fair. It has been a first class act.
